As the director at MozArt Music Academy, a mom, musician, and an educator, I often hear parents express concerns about keeping their child motivated in music. Learning an instrument or developing musical skills is a journey that requires persistence, patience, and joy. So how do we help children stay engaged and continue enjoying music over the years?
Here are some key strategies that I’ve found effective through my experience.

Make Music Fun and Engaging
Music should never feel like a chore. Incorporating games, creative exercises, and play-based learning can make practice sessions more enjoyable. For younger children, interactive activities such as rhythm clapping games, improvisation, or even composing their own little tunes can keep them excited. At MozArt, our experienced teachers specifically curate the private music lessons for each student's age, interest, and learning style to make the learning process fun and engaging at all times!
Let Them Choose Their Music
Giving children some autonomy over what they play can be incredibly motivating. At MozArt Music Academy, we often encourage students to pick their own songs. While structured lessons are important in developing strong foundational skills, adding some freedom by allowing them to pick songs they love, whether it’s a pop song, a movie soundtrack, or a classical piece, can make a significant difference in their enthusiasm.
Set Achievable Goals and Celebrate Progress
Breaking music learning into small, manageable milestones helps maintain motivation. At MozArt Music Academy, we encourage celebrating progress by recognizing each achievement with medals, certificates, and fun stickers whether it’s mastering a new song, improving technique, or simply staying committed to regular practice.
Encourage Social and Group Experiences
Music is meant to be shared! Encouraging children to join a band, orchestra, or choir can boost their enthusiasm. Playing with peers fosters collaboration, accountability, and a sense of belonging, making the musical journey more enjoyable.
Keep a Balanced Approach
While structured lessons and practice are important, it’s crucial to maintain balance. Avoid putting too much pressure on achievements or perfection. After all, "practice makes progress, not perfection." We want our students know that practice leads to improvement and growth, so that they are not striving for an unattainable ideal of perfection. This way, we can nurture their love for music by allowing time for free play, improvisation, and simply enjoying the act of making music.
Expose Them to Live Music and Inspiring Musicians
Attending concerts, watching live performances, or even introducing children to different musical styles can spark excitement. Seeing talented musicians in action can ignite a desire to practice and improve their own skills. There are many free concerts and venues to attend around L.A., or even at CSUN's School of Music, so go enjoy the music scene!
Be a Supportive and Encouraging Listener
As a parent, showing genuine interest in your child’s musical progress is one of the best ways to keep them motivated. Listen to their performances, encourage them to express themselves through music, and remind them that effort and passion matter more than perfection.
Final Thoughts
Keeping a child motivated in music is about fostering joy, curiosity, and perseverance. Whether or not they become professional musicians, the goal is to instill a lifelong love for music. By creating a supportive, engaging, and inspiring musical environment like we strive to do at MozArt Music Academy, we can help children experience the true joy of making music.
